Madison Bumgarner made it look easy Tuesday night. He struck out 12 Astros over 7.2 innings, allowing just six hits and one run. Bumgarner's start kept the Strikeout and Quality Start categories tied for Twinkle Toes, despite having one less starter on the mound. In addition to his pitching exploits, Bumgarner pitchslapped Bud Norris before the latter limped off the mound after 3.1 innings, having given up three earned runs and the ultimate disgrace, a home run to an opposing pitcher.
Twinkle Toes 6, Lower Haighters 1
The teams are tied in Strikeouts and Quality starts but four of the five starters have pitched for the Lower Haighers while only two starters have climbed the mound for the Toes. Brian Matusz and Tim Hudson could give the Toes a big advantage in both categories when they start tonight. Second baseman Neil Walker has been the offensive star of the series, belting a home run and driving in three runs for the Haighters on Tuesday. Seth Smith has two RBI for the Toes.
High Cheese 8, Marin Menehunes 3
Adam Jones has a home run, two RBI, and two runs scored for High Cheese while the bullpen has been perfect to start the series. Setup men Steve Cishek and Grant Balfour both have holds and have combined to strikeout four batters while Ryan Cook has a save for High Cheese. The Menehunes rode their thrill ride of a starting pitching staff to great heights Tuesday as Max Scherzer and Clay Buchholz combined to strikeout 17 batters as each earned quality starts. Josh Willingham has hit a home run while Carlos Ruiz has scored twice to lead the team at the plate. Rookie Tommy Milone starts tonight for High Cheese, trying to build on the momentum established by Tuesday's quality start from Adam Wainwright.
Home Run 101 6, Los Coche Bomba 5
Predictably, Bomba is dominating at the plate but Home Run 101 is holding its own on the mound, making this a tight series. A.J. Pierzynski and Todd Helton have both hit home runs for Bomba while Jimmy Rollins has tallied two RBI. Andrew McCutchen and Michael Bourn each have a stolen base. Home Run 101 is 3-for-3 in Quality Start attempts in brilliant fashion. Colby Lewis, Johnny Cueto, and Josh Johnson have allowed just three combined runs over 25 innings while striking out 21 batters. The 'pen has also been perfect with Sergio Romo and Cory Wade each scoring a hold and Randy Choate striking out the only batter he's faced. Matt Garza and Matt Harrison will start tonight for Bomba while Wade Miley takes the hill for Home Run 101.
A-Rod's Mirrors 7, Scully's Slammers 5
The Mirrors are dominating the offensive statistics in this series through brute force but the Slammers are keeping it close thanks to brilliant pitching. The Mirrors have five home runs in two days. Alex Rodriguez, Bryce Harper, and Denard Span have each scored three times while Rodriguez also has four RBI. Quality starts from Zack Greinke and Mark Buehrle have given the Slammers the early pitching lead but it's the effort by the 'pen that has the Mirrors in a real pitching hole. Four relievers have combined to pitch 4.1 scoreless innings with Tyler Clippard, Jim Johnson, and Heath Bell all earning saves while Ross Detwiler has a hold. The Mirrors will make a run at the Quality Start and Strikeout categories tonight when Cole Hamels, Stephen Strasburg, and Kevin Correia pitch.
The Cys 5, The Bulls 4
Young Felix Doubront has a lot riding on his shoulders for the Bulls tonight. Chris Capuano, Bud Norris, and Jason Vargas have all failed to earn quality starts this week and the team is falling behind. Doubront needs a quality start to keep the Bulls competitive in the pitching categories. The Cys are 2-for-3 on QS attempts, with Mike Minor impressively negotiating a tough Yankee lineup to earn his Tuesday. C.J. Wilson will face the Dodgers tonight for the Cys. Offensively, Brandon Inge is the star of the series, hitting a homer, scoring twice, and driving in two runs for the Cys.
The Machine 5, Give it a Yankee 5
Darwin Barney and a strong performance from the bullpen have rallied the Machine. Barney is a pest. On Tuesday, he drove in three runs, scored once, and stole a base. Jose Bautista has added a homer and a stolen base for the Machine, which leads just two offensive categories - Stolen Bases and RBI. Chris Davis and Nick Swisher have both hit home runs and knocked in two RBI for Give it a Yankee but the inability of Josh Beckett and Garrett Richards to earn quality starts could be important later in the week. It's a big night on the mound for the Machine tonight as Matt Cain, Ricky Nolasco, and Jake Peavy all pitch with an opportunity to give the team the Quality Start and Strikeout category leads.
Jersey Boys 4, Bacon at Mile 11 4
Both teams are sputtering out of the gate offensively. J.J. Hardy has scored twice for the Jersey Boys while Austin Jackson returned to the lineup Tuesday and promptly drove in two runs. The team has yet to go deep. Logan Morrison and Mike Trout both have home runs for Bacon and have provided the bulk of the team's offense. Aaron Harang's quality start and a save from Alfredo Aceves have given the Jersey Boys two early pitching points. Both teams have two starters on the mound tonight. Hiroki Kuroda and R.A. Dickey toe the rubber for the Jersey Boys while Lance Lynn and Hector Noesi start for Bacon.
HUMA 9, Vicious Fishes 2
The bullpen and five RBI from Joey Votto and Mitch Moreland have given HUMA the early lead in this series. A save from Kenley Jansen and a hold from Craig Stammen have given HUMA two points that will be difficult for the Fishes to match with two injured relievers on the roster. A.J. Ellis and Alex Gordon have each scored twice for the Fishes while Ellis and Paul Konerko each have a .750 OBP in the series. Mat Latos will pitch for HUMA tonight while David Price start for the Fishes.
