Earlier this year, Josh Hamilton unloaded on the Cys, bashing nine home runs and 18 RBI to lift HUMA to a series victory. On Tuesday, Kendrys Morales began returning the favor. The veteran slugger mashed two solo homers and rookie catcher Willin Rosario added another as the Cys opened up an early lead in the power categories.
HUMA 7, The Cys 4
While Rosario and Morales were slugging, Kenley Jansen and Robbie Ross were tossing 3.1 innings of scoreless relief to give HUMA the early series lead. The two relievers combined to strike out four batters and Jansen earned a valuable save. It gets serious tonight when Jon Lester, Jordan Zimmerman, and Chad Billingsley all start for HUMA. A.J. Burnett will pitch for the Cys.
Give it a Yankee 7, The Bulls 2
In Week 3, Mike Napoli erupted for five homers and 10 RBI to single-handedly lift Give it a Yankee to victory over Twinkle Toes. Is the veteran catcher getting hot again? He slugged a homer last night while Clayton Kershaw earned a quality start to lift Give it a Yankee to the early lead over the Bulls. This is a crucial series for Give it a Yankee as they trail the Bulls by 10-games in the North Division pennant race. Jason Vargas failed to earn a quality start for the Bulls Monday but did manage to strikeout eight batters. Neither team has a starter on the mound tonight.
The Machine 3, Twinkle Toes 2
Rookie Jarrod Parker took a no-hitter into the eighth inning for the Machine on Monday before exiting with a one-hit shutout. Ryan Vogelsong countered for Twinkle Toes, allowing just two runs over seven innings to earn a quality start. Ian Kennedy, Ubaldo Jimenez, and Tim Hudson will pitch tonight for Twinkle Toes as the team tries to take the early momentum in this series.
Marin Menehunes 10, Lower Haighters 1
Josh Willingham was up to his old tricks Monday, smacking a homer, driving in three, and scoring twice for the Menehunes. Willingham's power was instrumental in lifting the Menehunes to a series win over the Lower Haighters in Week 6. The Menehunes also received power from an unlikely source on Monday, as Scott Hairston went long and drove in two runs. The Lower Haighters responded with a home run from Justin Morneau. This series gets serious tonight when Tim Lincecum and Jaime Garcia pitch for the Menehunes and Ricky Romero starts for the Lower Haighters.
Scully's Slammers 7, Jersey Boys 1
The normally reliable Jonathan Papelbon imploded Monday while the erratic Brandon League was steady as Scully's Slammers took the early lead in this series. Papelbon gave up a run and later called out the home plate umpire as the Jersey Boys watched their ERA balloon. Meanwhile, League tossed a scoreless 1.1 innings, striking out three batters, and earning a valuable hold. Tonight, the Slammers will send Yovani Gallardo and James Shields in search of the team's first quality start for the week. Andy Pettitte will do the same for the Jersey Boys.
Los Coche Bomba 5, High Cheese 3
Joe Saunders walked a fine line Monday, giving up three runs over 6.2 innings but he earned a big quality start to open an important series for High Cheese. Tom Wilhelmsen also added a save to match Jason Motte's save for Bomba. Motte's dominance at the back end of the bullpen played a key role in lifting Bomba to the Week 6 victory over High Cheese. Newly acquired Homer Bailey will make his first start for High Cheese tonight while Bruce Chen and Derek Holland try to rebound from poor starts for Bomba.
Bacon at Mile 11 9, Home Run 101 2
Bacon has a save on the board thanks to Matt Capps but it also has a bullpen implosion by Marc Rzepczynski to blame for a bloated 7.71 ERA to begin this series. Home Run 101 flashed some power Monday thanks to a Lucas Duda bomb. Anibal Sanchez and Cliff Lee will be asked to chip away at the team ERA when they start for Bacon tonight. Ryan Dempster, who has struggled lately, will start for Home Run 101.
A-Rod's Mirrors 8, Vicious Fishes 3
The "Moose" was loose Monday. Mike Moustakas clubbed a home run, scored three times, and drove in two runs for the Fishes. The ancient knees of Rafael Furcal also nabbed a stolen base. The Mirrors responded with a home run from Kyle Seager but Jeff Samardzija failed to earn a quality start when he labored through five innings. Jason Hammel will battle the Green Monster in Boston tonight with an opportunity to give the Fishes a quality start and perhaps the series lead.
